Food Access Initiative

Access to fresh, nutritious food is essential for good health — yet many rural communities across North Florida continue to face persistent barriers. Limited grocery stores, long travel distances, and a lack of affordable healthy options have created pockets of food insecurity that deeply affect families, children, and older adults. At DSR Public Health Foundation, our Food Access Initiative works to close these gaps by bringing healthy foods directly to underserved communities and promoting the understanding that nutritious food is foundational to preventing and managing chronic disease.

DSR and Partners Fresh Food Distributions

Partnering with other organizations, we deliver fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins, and pantry items directly to communities with limited access. For many families, the lack of consistent access to healthy foods makes it difficult to follow dietary recommendations or manage chronic conditions—further reinforcing the reality that food truly functions as a form of medicine.

Town of Greenville Grocery Store/Farmers Market

Across counties such as Gadsden, Madison, and Jefferson, residents often live miles from the nearest supermarket. Many rely on convenience stores with limited produce or must travel out of town for basic groceries. These barriers contribute to higher rates of diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, highlighting the important role that everyday nutrition plays in overall health.
